January 18 Two great films from 2007
'I'm not there'.
'4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days'.I'm not there is like a contemporary art: frustrating and puzzling, but if you stare at it long enough and let your mind go, it all makes perfect sense! Everything is so fragmented. But unlike most of other fragmented films like Magnolia, Crash, Syriana etc, you don't have to keep using your brain to guess what's going to happen next. All you need to do is keep your brain at rest and actually start to appreciate the color, the picture, the arrangement and the emotion of the characters. 4 month, 3 weeks and 2 days is depressing and intense. Love how almost the whole movie is filmed with a hand-held camera, make you feel like you are just following someone else for 24 hours where she experienced horrible things such as arranging her friends' abortion, breaking up with boyfriend and getting raped 'volutarily' so that her friend could have her abortion and going into dodgy parts of city in wee hour to throw away the fetus. Makes me appreciate what woman need go through sometimes. Really good scenes of everyday life conversation as well. Casual but still tense. January 03 What's your new year's resolution? What's your new year's resolution? Sounded like a strange concept to me when I first heard of it after my first new year in England: instead of just having 'wishes', you should have 'resolutions', ACT. Don't just wait for lucky things to happen. Then I slowly realise a huge part of it is a marketing campaign: Want to get fit? sign up at your local gym! Tired of being single? Try online dating! I guess it's always a good idea to think about what you want to achieve in one year realistically.. But I always do it in Oct where the new academic year starts... New year is more like a mid-term review. Maybe Jan 1, 2009 will be the first time that I start actually think about new year's resolutions.. In the meanwhile, I'm contemplating on the fact that my goals this year are all on track. Do you lots have any interesting new year's resolution? |
